FAQ: Preparing your stop in Varaire
1. Is the L'Escale de Varaire gîte located directly on the GR65? Answer: Our gîte is located precisely at the entrance to the village when coming from Limogne and is 900 meters upstream from the village center and the route of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) . No unnecessary walking: you reach us via a shortcut that we send you in the morning. The next day, you can reach the church and the grocery store in 9 minutes.
2. What are the check-in hours for hikers/pilgrims/walkers? Answer: Check-in is from 3:00 PM . If you arrive earlier (in the rain or in very hot weather), please contact us: we will do our best to allow you to leave your bag and rest in our common areas. Check-out is no later than 9:00 AM .
3. Half-board or self-catering: how to eat? Answer: We offer half-board with local and homemade products, and a friendly table setting to share the spirit of the Camino. You also have access to a fully equipped kitchen for complete independence. The village also has a grocery store, a restaurant, and a pizzeria within a 10-minute walk.
4. How does luggage transport work (Malle Postale, etc.)? Answer: We partner with major carriers ( La Malle Postale, Transbagages ). Simply mention our establishment when making your reservation, and your luggage will be waiting safely in our dedicated area upon your arrival.
5. Do you provide sheets and towels? Answer: To reduce the weight of your pack, we provide fitted sheets and pillowcases. Towels are available for rent. Please note that a sleeping bag liner (lightweight sleeping bag) is still recommended for your personal comfort throughout the trek.
6. Can I maintain my equipment on site (clothing/shoes)? Answer: Absolutely. A dedicated space is available for your use with a washing basin, clothesline, or shared washing machine and dryer. We know that a successful start begins with dry feet and clean clothes.
7. Are there any specific services in Varaire? Answer: Despite its tranquility, Varaire is a lively village. You will find a grocery store, a post office, a bar-restaurant, and a pizzeria. It is the last "nature" stop before arriving in the more urban city of Cahors.
8. Is Wi-Fi available to help me plan the rest of my trip? Answer: Yes, Wi-Fi access is free and unlimited. It's essential for booking your next accommodations or checking the weather forecast for the Causse du Quercy region the following day.
9. Do you welcome pilgrims with animals (dogs, donkeys)? Answer: The Causse du Quercy is ideally suited to hiking with pack animals. We have an enclosed garden and a suitable paddock. Please let us know when you book so we can prepare for your pet's arrival. Regarding dogs, we accept one at a time. We have our dog Tina and our cat Turner living with us, and please note that we do not accept category 1 and 2 dogs or exotic pets.
10. What are the booking and payment terms? Answer: You can book directly by phone, email, or website. We accept payments in cash, by credit card, or by bank transfer. Checks are accepted only for deposits. During peak season, we advise you to book at least 48 hours in advance to guarantee your place.
Escale's advice
Prepare for the heat: The stage between Varaire and Cahors offers few water sources and crosses limestone areas that reflect the heat. Take advantage of your stay at the gîte to fill your water bottles as much as possible and ask us for the grocery store's opening hours for your morning supplies!
Variant via Lalbenque: If you don't need to go through Cahors, we recommend the Lalbenque alternative, which takes you directly to L'Hospitalet, south of Cahors. This option can save you 20 km, or a day, in your itinerary.
Cahors via Lalbenque: If you have difficulty walking the 33 km to Cahors, one solution is to go to Lalbenque train station, which is 23 km and a 10-minute train ride to Cahors.
